Michelin awards ‘Bib Gourmands’ to Casino House
The Michelin Guide, as well as dishing out stars for the world’s fanciest high-end restaurants, also nominates places to receive a ‘Bib Gourmand’. The Bib Gourmand represents fine dining at what the Michelin Guide considers to be affordable prices.

Quote: "just two people working the way they want, and doing what they want"
It’s the surprise dishes that you encounter on the menus in Casino House that make this charming space quite as charming as it is. Cevapcici, for instance: meatballs served with a sweet and sour cucumber salad. Or a strudel of goat’s cheese and pine nuts that is enlivened and bolstered by the addition of Swiss chard. Or the prawn wonton that partners a fillet of john dory.
These are small riffs on otherwise classic dishes, but they show how Michael Relja has a culinary style that is not like anyone else’s. It’s a style of food – the place where professionalism meets a strong desire to be domestic, if you like – that also suits the style of Casino, which doesn’t – again – feel like a conventional restaurant. It looks and feels more like someone’s house, though a swish and stylish house, mind you. In this sense, Casino is quintessential West Cork: nothing slick or by-
the-book, instead just two people working the way they want, and doing what they want, quietly left-field, and not at all self-conscious. Excellent value for money, too.
